Notes: Navy gave young man 2 brushes with history
Veteran was reticent about his adventures
By Louise Taylor, Free Press Staff Writer

Ensign John Parrott stood watch aboard the cruiser USS
San Francisco early one morning when he saw dozens of airplanes swooping down.

Training maneuvers, he thoght. But as the aircraft approached, he made out the Rising Sun on each fuselage. A sailor next to hime muttered: "Them ain't our planes."

It was 7:55 a.m. on Dec 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

As the surprise attack began, another sailor climed the watch deck and announced: "I thought I'd come up here to die."

Mr. Parrott, who died Thursday of congestive heart failure at his Bloomfield Hills home, was a Pearl Harbor survivor whose vivid memory of that morning was immortalized in Walter Lord's book, "Day of Infamy."

But Pearl Harbor was not Mr. Parrott's only brush with history.

Before the war, fresh from the Navy's Reserve Officer Training Corps progam at the University of Washington, he was dispatched on the unsuccessful search for Amelia Earhart's airplane, which disappeared over the Pacific in 1937.

Later, he fought in the Battle of Midway and became a lieutenant commander aboard teh submarine Croaker, "which sunk its share of Japanese shipping traffic," said Mr. Parrott's son Lawrence.

Mr. Parrott never revisited Pearl Harbor, and for a long time rarely spoke of his military exploits, his son said.

"We found out quite by accident about sme things. He could not watch some TV shows, for instance, becuase they were too gory and brought back grisly memories of the war."

Mr. Parrott left the Navy in 1947 to work for Ford Motor Co. He later worked at Wilding Pictures and then the Kerbawny Co., as a manufacturing expert who for years was in charge of shows where Ford's new models were unveiled.

Mr. Parrott was not a particularly pious man, but put "incredible value on the sanctity of marriage," his son said. "He was one of the world's greatest married men." Mr. Parrott was married twice, 1945 to Cherie Noble, who died in 1965, and then to Irene Byerlein, who survives him.

Before he died, Mr. Parrott gave each of his children a two-hour audio tape enclosed in a miniature oack sea chest. On that tape was an account of his war experiences. "My wife's parents took it on a ski trip, and when they got to where they were going, they decided not to ski," said Lawrence Parrott. "Instead, they sat in the car and listened."

In addition to his wife and son Lawrence, Mr. Parrott is survived by a son, John; two daughters, Tina Carson and Virginia Petzgold, and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Christ Church Cranbrook, 470 Church Road, Bloomfield Hills.
